More bums than seats

24 April 2007 |

Have you ever felt the fear of redundancy? After a takeover or “merger” have you looked around the room and thought ‘when the music stops I’m not sure there’ll be a chair for me’. Not nice, but sometimes just a fact of life. And for some actually a welcome chance to get away from their organisation. With a seemingly never-ending round of acquisitions and resultant job-loss fears, what advice can you offer those who may face the axe? Or, what tips could you give to make sure it isn’t you who gets called in for the ‘chat with the boss’?

  1. I think it’s safe to say the days of ‘a job for life’ are long gone, it is likely that the average graduate will work for half a dozen companies over their lifetime.

Greater attention should be paid toward the development of contract management skills as non-value adding tasks will see a fall in demand.
