The China Syndrome
Brits Get Rich in China on Channel 4 last night was a lesson to many of us in the reality of trying to manufacture or source in China.
There were many examples of the things buyers fear about overseas sourcing. Broken promises, poor quality products, non-existent factories. But some of the documentary’s participants took an unorthodox approach to solving these problems, unlikely to be employed by too many buyers.
Take Rochdale kitchen retailer Vance Miller as an example. Miller had been attempting to source materials at a stone quarry in China but, unsatisfied with the quality of the products that he was being offered, he swiftly bought the quarry himself for £30,000.
