Is procurement’s head on the block?

Whenever job losses are announced at a company, such as at Cadbury Schweppes today, "back office functions" are usually the first to find themselves on the chopping block, either to be cut or outsourced.

But is procurement now high profile enough to avoid being included in the first swathe of losses? Many purchasers that I speak to believe that their companies see their departments as strategic, and certainly see themselves as strategically important – but the important question is does the CEO?

Is procurement now seen as valuable enough to avoid being the first department to be cut? Or does it still have work to do?
