Lead the charge instead of the complaint

Leadership is a prominent feature of this issue’s magazine (July 19).

We see a demonstration of it in the way Detlef Schultz, global supply chain manager at Vodafone is overhauling procurement; we have an article describing how to become an effective leader; and the editorial urges purchasers to avoid complaining about a credit deficiency and instead get out there and earn it – as top buyers speaking at a recent procurement summit in Switzerland have done.

“What none of them said was the kind of thing I am afraid I hear very frequently from many buyers: ‘we don’t get the recognition we deserve’ or ‘we can’t get a seat at the top table’,” it read.

“Their starting position was: ‘We are key to our business – how are we going to capitalise on that?’ Nobody’s premise asked: ‘how will I get noticed’.”

Does procurement too often muse over a lack of recognition as opposed to demonstrating why it deserves it?
