A question posed by a reader:
“My purchasing department has been asked to measure the performance of solicitors. They are currently chosen from a designated panel and it is expected that this information will be used in the decision on who will be on the list and also to improve supplier performance. Are there any systems already in operation and what factors should I look to measure?”
Advisers told us:
• unfortunately the overall success of legal advice is difficult to judge until after the event, so be assured of the professionalilsm, experience, and reputation of the firm you deal with
• break the brief down into a set of simple activities which can be easily assessed as having been completed
• costs, milestone reports and a timetable should be set out in the contract to facilitate performance measurement by a good project manager who may well be your in-house lawyer
