And what’s your job?

This issue’s guest opinion writer, Andy Davies, deputy chief executive at FireBuy, explains his unease at explaining his profession to strangers:

“It’s worst when I’m at a dinner party with people I don’t know,” he says. “They’ll be in medicine, marketing or merchant banking and I know that sooner or later they’re going to ask me.

“It’s not that I’m ashamed of what I do – far from it – it’s just that I’m not sure how best to describe it.”

He wonders if ‘supply chain management’, ‘commissioning’, ‘sourcing’, ‘procurement’ or ‘purchasing’ are the best description, before plumping for simply ‘buyer’.

“So I try it at the dinner party,” he says.
“‘A buyer? That’s wonderful! And what do you buy?’
‘Respiratory protective equipment?’
‘Oh… how nice.’”

Do you face the same dilemma?
