How can you stop child labour?
So Gap has become the latest high-profile organisation to face accusations that its suppliers (or a subcontractor carrying out work on the supplier’s behalf) was using child labour.
This is about the worst imaginable PR for a high street chain and Gap has been swift to act, launching an investigation, reiterating its opposition to child labour and reminding the world of its previous actions to combat this practice.
But as a report on the Today programme this morning pointed out, for all of India’s economic growth “there are still more people in this country [India] who have to live on less than a dollar a day than in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa.”
Despite numerous initiatives and universal opprobrium the terrible and exploitative employment continues. And with such grinding and widespread poverty, it probably will continue, however much the rest of the world dislikes it.
Supplymanagement.com would be very keen to hear about any systems in use anybody that guarantee first tier suppliers, their vendors and their subcontractors won’t under any circumstances allow children to be used in the production of goods.
