In this issue, we look at two of the more glamourous areas of buying; rubbing shoulders with celebs in a procurement job at a media organisation and buying for the ultra-cool Glastonbury music festival.

Apart from the exciting world of TV, film and music, what other glamourous purchasing roles are out there?

What would be your dream buying job?

  1. To work in a procurement team for a car manufacturer like Ferrari or Aston Martin. Imagine the perks!

  2. I frequently look to see what options exist and are available in film – particularly around organisations such as the BFI.
I also patiently await Portsmouth City Council finally granting planning permission for a new Pompey FC stadium, dreaming of being involved with the construction and upkeep of that project.

  3. Cristian, I’ve met one of the buyers for Aston Martin and the perks aren’t really as good as you would imagine. Well, unless you count being able to borrow one of the cars for the weekend, but even then they are forced to put in a couple of hundred miles in them.
I think my dream job would probably be some kind of interim/consultancy work, bouncing around between megacorporations, fixing problems, building networks and always moving on to a new challenge.

  4. I’ve bought spares for a BMW dealer, diamonds(industrial) for a mining equipment manufacturer, chemicals for detergent etc but my dream role is with a UN Agency in a conflict zone.I just need the adrenaline dose and satisfaction of helping people who really need (and appreciate)one’s effort.

  5. Thanks Andrew, I suppose your going to tell me Santa isn’t real now either… :(

  6. Santa? Now there’s a dream purchasing role. You’d need excellent forward planning to ensure everything was ready in time for Christmas Eve, customer appraisal techniques (naughty or nice) and a truly unique logistical challenge. I wonder how elves fit into an equality and diversity recruitment policy.
