Obituary: The £2 chicken
According to a recent article in the Financial Times, rising cost inflation has claimed another victim: the £2 chicken.
Rising food prices have seen the cheap bird disappear from shelves, as supermarkets put up prices for consumers. But, according to National Farmers’ Union economist Richard George, the price of raising chickens has risen by 50 per cent in the last year and farmers are now having difficulty persuading supermarkets to pass these costs on to consumers.
Maybe supermarkets have the power to handle a large group of disgruntled suppliers, but for most buyers this won’t be the case.
Is there a compromise that could be reached between the two parties?
