Remembering procurement pioneers

Amid all the problems with US defence procurement right now, it was heartening to see this tribute in the Washington Post to the late David J Burke – a retired Air Force colonel and authority on weapons procurement.

Burke – whose time in the profession included four years at Andrews Air Force Base from 1977 – is not alone in getting high-profile accolades for his hard work in purchasing and supply over the years.

When Wal-Mart’s former president David Glass decided not to seek board re-election this year, chairman Rob Walton this week pointed to Glass’s pioneering supply chain work as a major achievement.

“David joined Wal-Mart at a crucial time in the company’s history, bringing expertise in finance and distribution and pioneering the use of computer systems to link our stores and supply chain,” Walton said in a statement to media.

Glass joined Wal-Mart in 1976.

It got us here at SM thinking, which contributions to the profession will the current high-flyers be remembered for in a few decades time?
