Expenses scandal compares to past procurement infamy
This article in yesterday’s Daily Telegraph compares the current expenses scandal to those of the past. Interestingly two of the shameful episodes from the past they feel bear comparison are scandals involving procurement and contracts.
The first – the “Marconi scandal” in 1912 – involved a number of senior Liberal party politicians buying shares in the US subsidiary of the telecoms firm before the British government awarded the UK firm a lucrative contract.
The second was the “Poulson scandal” at the end of the 1960s, where architect John Poulson bribed politicians in exchange for building contracts.
Wrongdoing in purchasing is nothing new – look at the allegations reported at the United Nations over the past few years.
