Cause for celebration?
If you’re in China, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Russia or one of 11 other countries, you might be enjoying a day off because International Women’s Day is an official holiday where you are.
Thousands of events are being held across the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements – and in places where it’s a national vacation, the tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends and colleagues with flowers and small gifts.
International Women’s Day has been observed in some places since the early 1900s when things were very obviously different. But for those who believe all the battles are over, organisers point out women are still not paid equally, they are not seen in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.
In June 2007 SM did a special women’s issue, focusing on the successes and drawbacks for women in purchasing. This issue was a bit like Marmite – readers either loved or hated it. It looked at whether there was equality of pay in procurement and supply and the challenge of trying to strike a work-life balance. It found while there was progress, there were still some real challenges, so what’s your experience today? We’d love to hear from you.
