Could your star rise in the East?

23 May 2011 |

Yesterday’s CIPS Middle East Conference was a great event.

There were some really interesting case studies about the various procurement “journeys” undertaken locally. The profession is undoubtedly on the rise here.

With this level of enthusiasm for procurement and the success and commitment of local organisations, the opportunities here are vast. But the one thing lacking is a pool of experienced buyers to meet the huge demands from the local public and private sector bodies. They need talent and they need it now.

This presents a huge opportunity for buyers elsewhere in the world. We will be returning to this subject over the next few weeks, providing more details of the types of openings available. But whether the attraction is the vacancies themselves, the virtual non-stop sunshine or the tax-free salaries, this region (particularly Dubai, Qatar and Abu Dhabi) is in need of experienced procurement professionals. And while there are programmes to train local buyers, this may not be enough in the medium term. Stay tuned for more on this.

  1. I am afraid few purchasing professionals will risk working in those nations where uprisings arise from time to time. No one will know if there is embargo on imports, that is, discontinuity of supply, any one day.

  2. Very much appreciated Dear Steve.

  3. Quite right can this go on forever?
