Businesses unsure about Euro relationship

It is difficult to avoid coverage of the Eurozone crisis, as it dominates most newspaper front pages and leads most news bulletins.

Although it’s something you’ve probably got an opinion on, most businesses are unwilling to put one forward.

When 7,500 companies were asked by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) what sort of trading relationship they would prefer with Europe, 54.8 per cent said they don’t know or had no opinion. Of those that did, just 3.9 per cent wanted monetary union, but at the opposite end of the spectrum, 4.4 per cent favoured withdrawal from the EU in favour of bi-lateral trade agreements.

“It is also staggering to see just how many businesspeople are unsure or unaware of whether links to the rest of Europe benefit them,” said BCC director general John Longworth.

It might also just be that businesses are keeping their options open and waiting to see how the crisis is resolved – or comes to a head – before deciding on the best course of action.
