The living wage is not just about CSR

With the dust having truly settled following living wage week last November, I am left wondering whether enough progress is buy personal narrative essay being made at the right speed.

There is no doubt that the living wage campaign really took off at the end of last year. The number of companies signed up to pay it has nearly doubled since November, to over 140. It has started to spread in the public sector as well as private, with the Department for Work & Pensions set to pay it, along with a growing number of local councils. (more…)

Recent high profile news stories have thrust outsourcing into the public spotlight and under this brightness, the industry may seem pale and washed out. Despite this it has to be understood whenever private sector companies bid for public sector contracts there is always a great amount of scrutiny through formal EU governed processes. SME improvements in public sector should be highlighted

Rebecca Ellinor, managing editor, Supply ManagementPrime Minister David Cameron said in February that he wanted to increase the amount of government work awarded to small and medium-sized enterprises from around 5 to 25 per cent. In order to do that, he said, it needed to overhaul the way it does business and would support central government purchasers who take a chance on smaller suppliers.

However, speaking at the SME Public Procurement Conference 2011 at Painters’ Hall in London yesterday, Chuka Umunna MP, shadow minister for small business and enterprise questioned whether another government policy – more aggregated deals – was resulting in fewer opportunities for SMEs. (more…)
